Our sexuality is one area of our life that the Bible gives specific and clear cut instructions (as there are for other areas). The Bible tells us how to live as singles and married. The Lord’s standard regarding sexual purity is very clear and unchanging.
Here are few passages that highlights God’s instructions as regarding our sexuality purity.

1Thessalonians 4:3-5 (New International Version)
It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God.

There’s a way to control the body which is unholy and not honourable. In a bid to avoid heterosexual sex, masturbation, pornography, oral sex, body contact void of penetration etc to ‘control’ themselves. However, these controls make them even the more vulnerable. When you are able to guard your heart, then you will be able to control your body.

1Corinthians 6:18-20 (New Living Translation)
Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

Your body is God’s dwelling and God is Holy. It is not possible for a Holy God to live in an unholy or defiled temple. I particularly love this translation, it says no other sin so clearly affects the body as sexual sin does. We were bought at a high price. God’s free gift to us costs Him so dearly. Therefore, honour God with your body. Understand that you were not saved so you could live carelessly in the body. What you do with your body matters as much as your regenerate spirit. Jesus did not bear ‘everything’ on the cross so you could live ‘anyhow’ in the body.

Romans 12:1-2 (New International Version)
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

This is a call to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing as this is the sacrifice that God finds acceptable. It’s not only when we sing solemn thanksgiving songs that we worship, but the way we live is also an act of worship. So, don’t just worship God with your mouth. Rather, worship with your life also.  Don’t just study the word for knowledge sake or to preach to others, soak yourself in the word and live it. Immorality is loud, so the scriptures must be loud around you and in you. As we behold God in His word daily, our hearts are renewed and we’re transformed into the same image as He is.

Matthew 5:27-28 (New Living Translation) ; Proverbs 23:7a (King James Version)
“You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”

Purity doesn’t start with the body. It starts with the heart. The Bible says make a tree good and it’s fruit will be good. If your heart is right, then your life will be right. A lot of people live frustrated lives simply because they don’t control what goes into their heart through their eyes and ears. You watch obscene music videos, listen to songs with lustful lyrics and then wonder why you can’t control yourself. Of course, you can’t! Carefully guard your heart. Remember, there’s a way that seems good to a man but the end is that of death (Proverbs 14:12).

Hebrews 13:4 (King James Version)
Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Marriage is good and beautiful, there’s no doubt. However, there are obligations strictly for married people. Sex outside marriage will always be fornication. Nothing will ever justify it. Besides, those who are married are obliged to stay faithful to their partners. The marriage bed has to be undefiled whether you’re single or you’re married. Stay clear of everything that can defile the marriage bed.

These standards are not the ones that are unachievable. God has given us his commands and He has also given us his Spirit to help us live and walk according to these commands. Today, choose to engage the power of the Holy Spirit to help you live a life of absolute purity.
