I have always thought that sexual purity is all about being a “virgin” and it doesn’t matter whether I watch pornography, masturbate, kiss or even cuddle someone to satisfy my sexual urge as long as I do not allow sexual intercourse. But few years ago, the Lord opened my eyes to what sexual purity entails. God desires that as much as we have not been defiled in the body, we should also not be at heart. It is God’s desire that we be sanctified and avoid sexual immorality in all it’s form – 1Thessalonians 4:1-7, 1Corinthians 6:18-20.

Is  virginity  the  same  thing  as  purity?  There’s  always  a  confusion  between these  two  words,  as  people  think  they  are  the  same but  clearly  as  we  are  going  to see,  these  two  word  are  not  the  same  at  all.  The  fact  that  you  have  not  had  sex does not imply  that  you  are  totally  pure.  What  about  other  activities  such  as  lesbianism, homosexualism,  pornography  and  the  likes  that you  have  been  involved  in?? The impression  is  after  all,  I  have  not  had  sex  with  a  man or woman so  everything  is  okay  but  I tell  you  everything  is  wrong. A  virgin  is  someone who  has  not  had  sex  while purity is  more  than  whether  an  individual  has  had  sex or  not.

Purity  deals  with the  heart and  motives-  your  thoughts  which  no  man  knows  about. Therefore,  anything  that contaminates  the  soul,  body  and spirit  is  immoral  and  ungodly.  This  is  why  God has  called  us  to  embrace  absolute  purity  in dealing with the opposite sex (1Timothy 5:2) .  Purity  is  something  you pursue  even  after  getting  married  or  after  you  have  had  sex. A  life  of  purity  cares about  dressing  modestly  and  decently,  what we  allow  our  eyes  to  feed  on  and pleasing  God  above  men  or  our  bodies, and total devotion to the Father. The  fact  that  you  have  had  sex  as  a  youth outside  marriage does  not  mean  you  cannot  pursue purity  again.  All  you  have  to do is  recognize  you  are  a  sinner  and  run  to  Jesus  for  help. The  joy  of  sexual  sin  is always  temporary  and  followed  by  guilt and  shame  but  God  offers  forgiveness  and eternal  life  for  those  who  have  gone  astray.

If  like  Dinah (Genesis 34:1-2) you  have been  defiled, now  is  the  time  to  turn  to  God  who  is  just  and  merciful  enough  to  offer  you forgiveness  and  purity  that  comes from  cleansing  you  with  the  Blood  of  Jesus. You can still enter into the purity of Hebrews 9:14 where it says, “how much more then will the Blood of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death so that we may serve the living God”. Confession, repentance, acceptance of God’s Lordship and prayer will bring cleansing and a restored purity . And if  you  have  not been  defiled,  remember  you  are  the  Mary (females) as well as Joseph (males) God  is looking out  for  in  your  generation.

Now,  this  is  the  conclusion  of  the  whole  matter; avoid immorality,  resist  the  devil  and  he will  flee  from  you. Do not think there’s no hope for you again. Jesus Christ came to redeem the lost and reconcile them unto Himself. God is interested in you. Heaven is interested in your soul. Take a bold step of Faith today and you’ll not regret it. Remember that the scripture says that “whosoever defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy” (1Corinthians 3:16-17). You can not win a battle against God. Sexual immorality is like battling against the Lord because He said adulterers and whoremongers He will judge (Hebrews 13:4b). It is not too late to accept God’s love and receive the purity that only the Blood of Jesus gives. Remember, Jesus loves you and he wants to give you a fresh start. A new beginning.
